Istanbul to Abant: A Nature Escape Guide

📅 2026-02-15⏱ 6 min✍️ Dashur Travel

Why Abant?

Lake Abant is a stunning freshwater lake in the Bolu province, 270 km east of Istanbul. Formed by a landslide thousands of years ago, it sits at 1,328 meters altitude and is surrounded by pine forests and alpine meadows.

The lake is a protected nature park and a favorite weekend escape for nature lovers. In every season, it offers a different kind of beauty — spring wildflowers, summer hiking, autumn colors, and winter snow.

Lake Abant & Nature Walks

The lake has a 7 km walking path that circles it completely. The trail is flat and easy, perfect for families and casual walkers, and takes about 1.5 hours at a relaxed pace. Along the way you will find wooden benches, viewing platforms and picnic spots.

Bicycles and pedal boats are available for rent at the lake entrance. Many visitors also enjoy fishing, horseback riding, and photography — especially at sunrise when the lake is calm and mist rises from the water.

  • ✓Lake loop walk: 7 km, 1.5-2 hours
  • ✓Entrance fee: ~30-50 TRY per vehicle
  • ✓Best time to visit: early morning or late afternoon
  • ✓Best season: May-June (spring) or September-October (autumn)

Yedigöller & Bolu Attractions

While in the Bolu area, don't miss Yedigöller National Park — a stunning collection of seven small lakes connected by streams and waterfalls, 42 km north of Abant. It is a paradise for hikers and photographers.

Other nearby attractions include Gölcük Nature Park, the Bolu Museum, and the historic Mudurnu district. For a longer stay, many travelers combine Abant and Yedigöller over a weekend.

Best Time to Visit

Each season offers a different Abant. Spring (May-June) brings wildflowers and mild temperatures; summer (July-August) is warm and ideal for swimming and picnics; autumn (September-October) paints the forest in gold and red; winter (December-February) covers the lake in snow and ice.

Our recommendation: visit in spring or autumn for the most beautiful scenery and fewer crowds. Winter is stunning but requires snow tires and warm clothing. Summer weekends can be crowded, so arrive early.

Where to Stay & Eat

The area around Lake Abant offers a range of accommodation — from luxury resorts like Abant Palace Hotel to cozy wooden cabins and guesthouses. Many hotels have lake views and traditional Turkish breakfast included.

For meals, the lakeside restaurants serve fresh trout, grilled meats, and homemade Turkish dishes. Bolu is also famous for its chefs — many of Turkey's top restaurants have Bolu-trained cooks. Don't miss a Bolu-style breakfast.
